University House and International House (for Researchers)

※ International Students may submit their applications to the Student Life Support Division through their respective host department/faculty.

※ Please be advised that UH Katahira and International House are dormitories for those who have a(n) official affiliation/status of acceptance at Tohoku Univeristy. Those who do not have a status of acceptance at the university (business travelers) are not eligible to move in. Also, those who are elligible to reside in TU Staff Housing (excluding international researchers) are NOT elligible to apply for University House and International House. Please proceed to apply for Staff Housing through your host department.

The Process Leading Up to Tenancy

  1. Vacancy check & reservation (from 6 months prior to move-in date):
    To reserve a room, click the “Reservation” button on this page. Our center will screen the details of the reservation to confirm applicant’s eligibility. If the applicant is eligible for the room reserved and a room is available at the time of reservation, a reservation will be placed. However, if no room is available at the time of reservation, the applicant can choose to place the reservation on the waiting list.
  2. Move-in Application (up to 3 weeks prior to move-in date):
    Submit the move-in application by clicking on the link provided in the “Acceptance of Reservation” notification. The move-in application will be reviewed, and a move-in approval will be issued and sent to the applicant if the move-in application is approved. **Please be sure to notify us immediately if there are changes to the move-in date after the move-in approval was issued. Please note that we may not be able to accommodate any changes if notifications are made less than 5 days before the original move-in date.
  3. Submission of Pledge (up to a day before move-in date):
    A Pledge will be sent together with the move-in approval. Complete the electronical signature of the pledge before the move-in date.
  4. Move-in Procedure (on move-in day):
    Get the room key at the management office and complete the move-in procedure within the designated time frame. Please be sure to notify us if move-in procedure cannot be completed within the designated time frame.

University House Katahira (for international researchers)

Eligibility

※Those who are eligible to move into TU Staff Housing are not eligible to apply for this housing.

(A-Type Single Room (Unit-type Room with shared kitchen, shower and toilet))

Foreign researchers who meet the either of the criteria below are eligible to apply for this room type:

  1. Foreign researchers as stipulated under the Work Rules for Fixed-Term Employees (2009, Regulation No. 26) Article 6, Paragraph 2.
  2. Non-tenured associate employees, hourly employees, or short-term employees.
  3. Visiting researchers accepted in accordance with Tohoku University’s Regulations on Visiting Scholar Administration.
  4. Joint researchers from private sector stipulated under the Regulations on Joint Research Administration at National University Corporation Tohoku University, or JSPS researchers (fellows).
  5. Those who are accepted at Tohoku University to engage in a joint-research or educational activities with a faculty member of Tohoku University (excluding temporary visitors of Tohoku University).
  6. Other foreign researchers deemed eligible by the Administrator.

(Other Room Types)

Foreign researchers who meet the either of the criteria below are eligible to apply for this room type:

  1. Foreign researchers as stipulated under the Work Rules for Fixed-Term Employees (2009, Regulation No. 26) Article 6, Paragraph 2.
  2. Non-tenured associate employees, hourly employees, or short-term employees.
  3. Visiting researchers accepted in accordance with the provision of Article 4 (1) of the Regulations on Visiting Scholar Administration at Tohoku University (1970 Regulation No. 1).
  4. Other foreign researchers deemed eligible by the Administrator.

Vacancy Check and Reservation

After we have confirmed applicant’s eligibility, if there is a room available, an “Acceptance of Reservation” notification will be sent to the applicant together with a link to submit move-in application. Applicants are required to submit the move-in application at least 3 weeks prior to move-in date.

Reservations can be made by international researchers themselves or by their receiving parties, such as secretaries or staff members from their host department. If the reservations are made by the researchers themselves, we may verify the details with the PIC from their respective host departments. Please also note that move-in reservation is only confirmed after a move-in application is approved and “Move-in Approval” is issued.

※A “unit-type room” refers to eight individual rooms within a shared unit, which includes a communal kitchen, toilet, and shower room. Additionally, there is a coin-operated laundry on the premises that is available for use.

Modular bathroom (shower, bathtub, toilet, and wash basin), air conditioning, kitchen (with IH cooking hob), refrigerator, rice cooker, microwave, LCD TV, bed, study table and chair, table lamp, dining set, wardrobe, washer and dryer, iron and ironing table, vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, shoes cupboard, landline phone, curtain, etc.

  • Please be aware that in addition to the rent, tenants are responsible for covering other expenses such as utility bills, bedding rental fees, and move-out cleaning fees.
  • Please note that UH Katahira is a fully non-smoking facility, and smoking is strictly prohibited in all areas, including individual rooms and common spaces.
  • All rooms in UH Katahira feature an auto-lock door that can be accessed using an IC card.
  • Please note that kitchen utensils and tableware are not provided as part of the amenities in the room.
  • Please be advised that there is no designated parking space for cars or large two-wheeled vehicles. Only bicycle parking is provided for occupants of UH.
  • Please note that it takes several days or the internet connection to be activated and made available for use after application.

International House Sanjo 1 (For International Researchers)

※Those who are eligible to move into TU Staff Housing are not eligible to apply for this housing.

Foreign researchers who meet the either of the criteria below are eligible to apply:

  1. Foreign researchers as stipulated under the Work Rules for Fixed-Term Employees (2009, Regulation No. 26) Article 6, Paragraph 2.
  2. Non-tenured associate employees, hourly employees, or short-term employees.
  3. Visiting researchers accepted in accordance with Tohoku University’s Regulations on Visiting Scholar Administration.
  4. Joint researchers from private sector stipulated under the Regulations on Joint Research Administration at National University Corporation Tohoku University, or those employed as researchers etc. by the JSPS.
  5. Those who are accepted at Tohoku University to engage in a joint-research or educational activities with a faculty member of Tohoku University (excluding temporary visitors of Tohoku University).
  6. Those who are accepted National University Corporation in Japan to engage in a joint-research or educational activities with a faculty member of the University.
  7. Other foreign researchers deemed eligible by the Administrator.
