index Finding Accommodations

Tohoku University provides various kinds of support in finding accommodations. Services vary according to your status.

For Newly Arrived International Students

Although Tohoku University has several student residences, there are not enough rooms to accommodate everyone. To make up for the shortfall, we provide various kinds of information on how to find your own accommodations. Please ask your prospective academic advisor about accommodations as soon as you submit your admission application. In some cases, you may search for accommodations before acceptance into the program is confirmed.

Please read below on how to find accommodations.

※We cannot provide accommodations in student dormitories for students staying less than 3 months. They should look for private apartments or hotels.
For Especially Short Stays

For students wishing to live in dormitories

・Tohoku University provides International House as dedicated accommodations for international students and scholars, and University House for both international students and Japanese students.

・Dormitory requirements differ depending on the type of dormitory, so please refer to International House and University House to check your eligibility. Undergraduate students, graduate students, research students, credited auditors, special auditing students and special research students are eligible.

・Newly arrived international students may submit their dormitory applications through their prospective academic advisor. At present it is difficult to put all of the students in dormitories, so please verify the present housing situation with your academic advisor.

・In Principle, there are two move-in periods a year - April and October. The rough schedule is below. No applications will be accepted outside the application period. Because of space limitations, not all applicants will be selected. Furthermore, the dormitory that you will enter is decided during this process.

For Students Already in Japan

The maximum amount of time you can stay in a student dormitory depends on the property but it is usually between 6 months and 1 year. Depending on your period of stay as a student, even if you were able to enter a dormitory, you may have to look for an apartment some months later.

The process for finding an apartment is the same for newly arrived students but you may also search by yourself at realtors, websites and magazines. There are also some properties available for international students at University Co-op.

Please ask the staff in charge when applying.
※Visiting research scholars are not eligible to apply.

Private Apartments

There is no institutional guarantor system. If you cannot find a personal guarantor, using a guarantor company could be an option. You have to pay money to a guarantor company. Sendai-city offers a system called “Sendaishi Minkan Chintai Jutaku Nyukyo Shien Seido” to help you find a guarantor company. Because faculty members are allotted a commuting allowance, you can search for properties that are far from the campus. Apartments for Foreign People
