Cash Cards and Credit Cards Issued Overseas

Many overseas credit and cash cards can be used at Japanese ATMs and cash dispensers. Money can be withdrawn in Yen, morning or night, at any Seven Bank ATM. There are more than 20,000 such ATMs across Japan at 7-Eleven stores and other locations.

  • The limit per withdrawal for internationally-issued cards is 100,000 yen.
    The limit per withdrawal for UnionPay card, however, is 200,000 yen.

  • *1 As of January 10, 2014, some MasterCard Maestro cards fitted with an IC chip cannot be used until further notice. For more information, please refer to MasterCard's website

Money Withdrawal at Japan Post Bank ATMs_International ATM Service (Withdrawals for cards issued abroad)

Japanese (International ATM Service )

You can withdraw money at Japan Post Bank ATMs using a credit card or cash card issued by an overseas institution.
Notice: Following several instances of withdrawals made with stolen and counterfeit cards, Japan Post Bank has established a new withdrawal limit for single transactions.
As of May 27, 2013, the single-transaction withdrawal limit is 200,000 Yen.

Accepted Cards

Japan Post Bank provides cash withdrawal services for credit cards and cash cards issued by overseas financial institutions. Card bearers using VISA, VISAELECTRON, PLUS, MasterCard, Maestro, Cirrus, American Express, Diners Club, JCB, China UnionPay and DISCOVER can make withdrawals at Japan Post Bank ATMs.

* As of April 19, 2013, Some Maestro cards with IC chips are temporarily unable to make withdrawals at ATMs in Japan, including Japan Post Bank ATMs.

Some notes on using Japan Post Bank ATMs

All ATMs stop handling transactions from 21:00 on Sundays and National Holidays, until 07:00 the following morning.

Unless otherwise noted, a limit of 500,000 yen per day applies for cash withdrawals. If you wish to withdraw a larger amount, please visit Japan Post / Japan Post Bank to have the limit adjusted.

Limits for individual transactions at Japan Post Bank ATMs are as follows. Please note that only some ATMs can handle coins.

Deposit 10-1,050,000 yen
All notes and coins accepted, up to 100 of each
Withdrawal 1-1,000,999 yen
Only 10,000 yen and 1,000 yen notes can be dispensed, up to 100 of each. Coins are available only for amounts below 1,000 yen.

Japan Post Bank ATMs do not accept old 500-yen coins (issued before the year 2000).
Japan Post Bank ATMs cannot accept coins for transactions with affiliated financial institutions.

You can use a Japan Post Bank cash card at the ATMs of affiliated financial institutions, for both depositing to and withdrawing from Japan Post Bank accounts. For details, please refer to the website below.
